Miami East Alumni Chapter recognized by state

At the recent Ohio FFA Alumni State Conference held in Columbus, Ohio, the Miami East FFA Alumni Chapter and several of its members were recognized for outstanding accomplishments and dedication to the promotion and advancement of the FFA and Agricultural Education. Jackie Winner and Les Kinder served as voting delegates during the annual business meeting. They voted on changes to the organization’s constitution and elected new members to the leadership council.

Jackie Winner was recognized as a Top 3 Finalist for the Horizon Award. Jackie is within the first three years of her FFA Alumni membership and has demonstrated an outstanding service and advocated for Agricultural Education, FFA and the FFA Alumni.

Les Kinder serves at the Miami East FFA Alumni Chapter President. He was recognized for being a Top 3 in the Outstanding Member award. Les is a dedicated member that assists with the graduating FFA members’ scholarship awards, multiple fundraising activities, and membership recruitment.Continue reading

Nursery Landscape competition sees West Holmes FFA compete

On Wednesday, January 15th the West Holmes FFA Chapter traveled to the Columbus Convention Center for the nursery landscaping competition in conjunction with the CENTS Nursery and Landscape Show.  The team placed 30th out of 38 teams. Individual placing’s were Jake Mullet 92nd, Grayson Miller 115th, Clay Armstrong 153rd, Chris VanSickle 164th, Dylan Harsh 347th, and Justin Lorentz 357th  out of 462 individuals. The team first had to take an online test over equipment safety, plant management and nutrition, and landscaping techniques. At the competition, the students test their skills in identifying landscape plants, weeds, and equipment. This year’s contest also involved an irrigation problem.… Continue reading

Mowrystown FFA holds Farmer Appreciation Day

On the 10th of January, the Morwystown FFA and alumni came together to host a farmer appreciation day during the boys basketball game.

The members dressed in official dress, passed out homemade cookies, and talked to farmers in the community about agriculture and joining the alumni.

Elgin FFA holds blood drive to collect critical units

On January 16th, the Elgin FFA held a blood drive at the new K-12 building from 8am-1pm. Every two seconds, someone in America needs blood. The Healthy Lifestyles FFA Committee recognized this need and held a 2nd blood drive this year. FFA members scheduled donors and publicized the event to aid in its success. The Healthy Lifestyles Committee strives to promote health and wellness in individuals, groups, and communities.

According to the American Red Cross, between Jan. 2 and Jan. 11, 2014, the winter weather forced the cancellation of nearly 320 American Red Cross blood drives, resulting in a shortfall of more than 9,300 blood and platelet donations. Under normal circumstances, a donor can give blood every 56 days. Donors must be at least 16 years of age with parent permission.… Continue reading

Miami East-MVCTC FFA Sponsors Coloring Contest

The Agricultural Promotions Committee of the Miami East-MVCTC FFA Chapter recently sponsored a coloring contest at Miami East Elementary.  Students in first grade were given a farm picture to color. FFA members evaluated the pictures and awarded first place to each homeroom.  The results are as follows:

Miami East FFA announces January Member of the Month

The January 2014 Miami East-MVCTC FFA Member of the Month is Colton Kowalak. Colton is the son of Mark and Gretchen Kowalak of Troy.

Colton was chosen because of his recent involvement in various FFA activities. In December Colton was extremely helpful in the loading and sorting of fruit during the FFA’s fruit sales fundraiser. Colton also helped shop for the FFA’s Adopt-A-Family through the Salvation Army. Colton earned the Greenhand FFA Degree and completed in the District Rural Soils Judging Team. His Supervised Agricultural Experience program is job placement at a local horse farm where he is responsible for cleaning horse stalls, feeding horses, and grooming horses.

Every month of the school year the Miami East FFA will select a student to be the FFA Member of the Month.  The officer team will nominate one student that has been actively involved in the FFAchapter, school and community activities.  If selected, the member will be recognized at the monthly FFA meeting, have their picture displayed in the Miami East Ag Room, and receive a special memento in celebration of their accomplishment.… Continue reading

Greenville FFA Chapter Members Receive Chapter FFA Degree

Twenty-two members of the Greenville FFA Chapter received the Chapter FFA Degree; the second high school degree awarded by the National FFA Organization. This honor recognizes demonstrated knowledge and achievements in agricultural awareness, leadership, career development and community service programs.

The Chapter FFA Degree is given to an FFA chapter’s top members. To receive a Chapter FFA Degree, members must meet the following requirements: Received the Greenhand FFA Degree, Satisfactorily completed 180 hours (or the equivalent) of systematic school instruction in agricultural education at or above the ninth grade level, Have an approved SAE in operation, Enrolled in an agriculture course, Participated in the planning and implementation of at least three official FFA chapter activities, Earned and productively invested at least $150, or have worked at least 45 hours outside of scheduled class time, or a combination of the two, through their SAE, Have developed plans for continued growth and improvement of their SAE, Effectively lead a group discussion for 15 minutes, Demonstrated five parliamentary law procedures, Show progress toward achievement in FFA award programs, Have a satisfactory academic record, Submitted a written application for the Chapter FFA Degree, Complete a minimum of 10 hours of community service activities.… Continue reading

Preble Shawnee FFA Advances to District Contest

The Preble Shawnee FFA chapter participated in the sub-district Parliamentary Procedure contest on November 11th at Preble Shawnee High School. The Participants that represented the chapter worked very diligently for this contest. Parliamentary Procedure takes a lot of memorization, confidence, and the ability to discuss business on and make it sound professional. Then, after the advanced team placed 2nd, and the greenhand team placed 1st. Both teams moved on to districts. Miami East-MVCTC FFA takes on Healthy Lifestyle Week

Miami East High School went “healthy” during the week of November 5 with activities sponsored by the Miami East-MVCTC FFA Chapter.  This project was made possible due to a $500 grant by the Ohio Small Grains Marketing Group.

The Healthy Lifestyle Committee sponsored a Food For Thought Log in which students and staff would record all the food and drink that they partake of during a day. During study halls, students received a healthy snack for keeping their log updated. Snacks included an apple, orange or banana, a low-fat whole grain snack bar, or water and a non-fat yogurt. About half of the high school participated in this activity. A special thank you goes to the Dannon Company for their donation of yogurt.

Additionally, the high school attended a Healthy Lifestyles Fair during lunch. Displays were provided by the Upper Valley Medical Center Sports Medicine, Miami County Family Abuse Shelter, American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, Excellence in Dentistry, Miami Valley Hospital, Miami East Schools Nurse Jeanelle Adkins, and the Miami County Health District.… Continue reading

Ft. Recovery FFA Members Receive American FFA Degree

Six members of the Ft. Recovery FFA Chapter were recognized for their hard work and effort in receiving the American FFA Degree Award, while attending the 86th National FFA Convention in Louisville, Kentucky.   The six individuals receiving this award were Kurt Fortkamp, Andrea Lennartz, Doug Lennartz, John Link, Jacob Whitacre, and Karissa Will. These six make only eighty-two students awarded this degree in the history of the Ft. Recovery FFA Chapter.

The American FFA Degree is the final step, in a four stepping-stone order of achievement within the FFA.  In order to receive this award, they were first required to receive their Greenhand, Chapter, and State FFA Degrees, the other three steps for each member in this process.  They were also required to document that they increased their net worth by at least 7,500 dollars, worked the equivalent of 2,250 hours on all of their projects, and be heavily involved in school, community, and FFA Chapter activities.… Continue reading

Anthony Wayne FFA Gives Back

On November 21st, farm manager, Drake Moore, and chapter officers, Cody Perry, Maddison Binkley, and Jacob Gase went on a field trip to donate a check to Toledo Seagate Food Bank. The chapter donated a total of $700 to the Food Bank, which was a portion of the profits from the farm ground that we farmed this year. The AW FFA planted, managed, and harvested soybeans of a 15 acre field in Maumee this year. The profits went toward the foodbank and will be used for students to attend conventions and leadership conferences.… Continue reading

Mount Gilead FFA attends Food Science contest

November 5th, Mount Gilead FFA members went to Highland to compete in the sub-district food science contest. Members that attended were Ben Hayes, Samantha Appleman, Kendra Hartman, Liz McAlister, Kayla Jordan, Taylor Watson, Brittany Broadwater, and Andrew Evans. The top scorers for the team were Kayla Jordan, Samantha Appleman, Kendra Hartman, and Andrew Evans.

November 19th the members that qualified for districts went on to South Eastern High school for the district contest. These members were Samantha Appleman, Kendra Hartman, Liz McAlister, and Ben Hayes. They placed 7th as a team.Continue reading

Miami East-MVCTC FFA announces December Member of the Month

The December 2013 Miami East-MVCTC FFA Member of the Month is Emily Beal of Conover. She is the daughter of John and Melissa Beal.

Emily was the high fruit seller in the FFA’s recent fundraiser. She sold over $2,100.00 worth of fruit and related items. Emily is a sophomore and second year member of the FFA. She has attended the National FFA Convention, participated in the FFA’s Princess For A Day for the March of Dimes, and competed in the chapter’s corn growing contet.

Every month of the school year the Miami East-MVCTC FFA will select a student to be the FFA Member of the Month.  The officer team will nominate one student that has been actively involved in the FFA chapter, school and community activities.  If selected, the member will be recognized at the monthly FFA meeting, have their picture displayed in the Miami East Agriculture Classroom, and will receive a special accolade in celebration of their accomplishment.… Continue reading

Zane Trace and Paint Valley attends National FFA Convention

Zane Trace and Paint Valley travels to National FFA Convention

Zane Trace and Paint Valley started the trip to the National FFA Convention early Wednesday morning on October 30.  Zane Trace had 34 people attending and Paint Valley had 10 people attending.  Their first stop on their journey to Louisville, Kentucky was to Jungle Jim’s, the largest single story grocery store in America.  Here, they had a tour where they got to try a wide variety of foods, such as cheesy worms, dragon fruit, and sushi.

Once the bus arrived in Louisville, they headed straight to the Kentucky Expo Center for the FFA Career Show.  The Career Show is a huge event where companies and colleges from all over the country come and set up booths, giving students the chance to find learn about options they have in their future through agriculture.  “It was really cool to see what all I can do in agriculture once I get out of high school,” said Ann Shelby.… Continue reading

West Holmes Parli Pro teams perform well

On Monday December 2nd the West Holmes FFA took a Senior and Junior Parli team to the Sub-District Parliamentary Procedure at Cambridge High School . The senior team placed first, members who participated on the senior team were President – Mandy Taylor, Vice President – Shyann Kick, Treasurer – Chris Vansickle, Reporter – Payten Boring, Secretary – Marris Hoffee, Sentinel – Kara Leadbetter, Student Advisor – Jarrett Brooks, and Member Lexi Kinstle. The junior team placed 2nd, the team consists of President – Marris Hoffee, Vice President – Paige Patten, Treasurer – Chris Vansickle, Reporter – Payten Boring, Secretary – Isaac Wine , Sentinel – Bryce Kelley, and Student Advisor – Jarrett Brooks. The Senior team then competed at Riverview High School on December 3rd. The team placed 6th. Teays Valley FFA holds assembly honoring veterans

The Teays Valley FFA, in conjuntction with Nicole Perry as a Senior Project, held a Veterans Day assembly honoring our veterans. The Teays Valley FFA had a Veterans breakfast from 6:45-8:15am where 40 veterans attended. Following the breakfast was an assembly where the whole school attended. The entire FFA chapter, along with Nicole Perry, set up the breakfast and gym for the school-wide assembly. The Teays Valley Symphonic Chorus sang God Bless the USA, and Landon Forman sang “I’m Proud to be an American” with accompanist Cole Burley on drumset, Max Samlow on guitar, and Mr.Eric Farrel on piano. The assembly guest speaker was Jason Graven, Director of Internal Affairs for The American Legion. Zane Trace FFA Wins District Food Science CDE

The Zane Trace FFA Chapter recently won it’s 6th District 7 Food Science and Technology CDE Championship.  The competition was held at Zane Trace High School on Tuesday, November 12th and featured 130 students from eleven different chapters in District 7. Prior to the contest, students completed an online exam that tested their knowledge of food safety, nutrition and handling.  Then, each student took part in five practicums related to food science.  The practicums included: aroma identification, flavor identification, customer complaint response, food safety and sanitation and the triangle taste test.  In each practicum students practiced many of the same skills that would be used by a food science professional.

The individual scores from the top four members of each chapter were tallied to determine the team placing.  The top four individuals from Zane Trace included: Kasandra Dalton (1st), Mariah Cox (2nd) Beau Bilek (4th) and Nat Mavis (7th) The team will now move on to compete in the State Food Science and Technology CDE at the Ohio State Parker Food Science Building on Saturday, December 7th.… Continue reading

Fort Recovery competes in national CDE

Members of the Fort Recovery FFA Chapter in Ohio were one of 44 teams participating in the National FFA Agricultural Tech. and Mech. Systems Career Development Event (CDE). The event was held in conjunction with the 86th National FFA Convention in Louisville, Ky.

The team, led by advisor Joe Hawk, was awarded a Gold emblem. Members also competed for individual awards with 166 other participants. Mitch Lennartz received a Gold emblem, Bryan Schoenlein received a Gold emblem, Alex Stammen received a Gold emblem, and Kaleb Timmerman received a Gold emblem.

The top ten individuals and the national winning team members received cash awards to recognize their success in the event. The cash awards and the agricultural technology and mechanical systems event are sponsored by the Firestone Farm Tires as a special project of the National FFA Foundation.

The National FFA Agricultural Technology and Mechanical Systems CDE is a competitive event that allows students to apply classroom knowledge to real-life situations.… Continue reading

Miami East-MVCTC awards Greenhand Degrees

On Monday, November 25, 2013, the Miami East-MVCTC FFA awarded 36 new members their Greenhand FFA Degree. The Greenhand Degree is awarded to first year members of the FFA, and is the first award that can be received. Each member awarded received a pin to be worn on their FFA jacket and a certificate of achievement. Maddy Buschur, State FFA President of the Ohio FFA Association, was the guest speaker.

In order to receive the Greenhand FFA Degree the members must be enrolled in an agriculture class, have plans for a Supervised Agricultural Experience Program, learned and explained the FFA Creed, Motto, Salute, Mission Statement, Code of Ethics and uses of the FFA Jacket, Colors, and Emblem, and demonstrated an understanding of the FFA’s history, chapter constitution and by-laws. The Greenhand FFA Degree is the first of four degrees that an FFA member can earn.
