It seems that this year, both in Ohio and around the nation, the final yields will be all about balance. There is no doubt there are disastrous conditions out there. We encountered some extremely poor fields — some of the worst we have ever seen — in northwest Ohio. There were also a tremendous number of unplanted fields in the region.

In contrast, though, other parts of Ohio may very well have record breaking yields. Some areas may have bin-busting yields and total losses in the same field. The ultimate question is will Ohio’s final yield more closely reflect the disasters we found in the northwest or the monster yields we found further south.… Continue reading

Corn Summary: Our first corn field of Day #2 of The Ohio Crop Tour had good sized ears, but those ears had some good sized tip back. The waviness of this field show how water damage affected it. Disease and pest pressures were very light here and in this Good rated field our yield estimate is 204 bushels to the acre.

Soybean Summary: There were some variable places in this field, but for the most part this field looked good with decent height and good pod numbers. Maturity is farther along here than anywhere we were yesterday. This was the first frog eye we have come across but this late in the season it will not make much of a difference.… Continue reading

Mercer County (Northwest)

Corn Summary: There were brown silks, tall stalks, good stalk strength, and minor N deficiencies. We saw some NCLB. There was no insect pressure and ear fill was good. The population was 33,500 in this excellent looking field. Good kernel depth. The yield estimate is 167 bushels.

Soybean Summary: They were in 15-rows with excellent yield potential. The beans in the low areas where water had been were 17 inches tall and 36 inches tall in the better areas of the field. Pods are setting all the way to the top of the plant. The population was 156,000 and there were some four-bean pods.… Continue reading

It was a day of incredible variability for the tour in western Ohio. We saw 200-bushel corn fields and generous estimates of 70 bushels per acre in other fields. The Putnam, Paulding, and Van Wert County fields were dismal, while Hancock, Allen and Auglaize offered much more impressive fields. The average yield for the day in the northwest quadrant of the state was 141 bushels per acre. We can’t wait to see what awaits as we move into southern Ohio.… Continue reading

Medina County

Corn Summary: For the initial stop of the 2015 Ohio Crop Tour for the I-71 route we found a decent corn field. The only thing that will hurt this field’s potential is the 23,000 population. You will also see in the pictures below that there were some spots that were a little more wet over the growing season and those ears were still developing due to a later planting date. Disease was seldom seen here with a little gray leaf spot below the ear.… Continue reading

Williams County (Southern)

Corn Summary: Looks like the field was initially wet early in the season then things dried out. There was some N deficiency and more disease pressure on the outside of the field, though overall low disease levels. The fields was at R2 as it had a late start. The field is fair but pretty good compared to surrounding fields, but it is awfully late. It will make a crop but it will be wet and has a ways to go.… Continue reading

2015 I-75/I-71 Ohio Crop Tour

To get a preview of what to expect this harvest season, the Ohio Ag Net and Ohio’s Country Journal team will once again go on the I-75/I-71 Ohio Crop Tour presented by Agro-Culture Liquid Fertilizers. On the tour, two teams of farmers, agronomists and OCJ/OAN staff will be crisscrossing I-75 and I-71 reporting crop conditions and yield estimates on August 12 and 13. The teams start in the north in Williams and Medina Counties and meet at the end in Clinton County. Over the two days, each team will sample a representative corn and soybean field in 20 counties (for a total of 40 counties over the two days).

2014 Ohio Crop Tour map

The groups will be estimating yields and overall conditions for corn fields and the conditions and yield potential of soybean fields. We will be updating the results on the go online at ocj.com, so check back regularly on our progress. Coverage will also include photos, videos and radio broadcasts of tour highlights.… Continue reading

How did the 2014 Ohio Crop Tour estimates stack up to actual yields?

Heading into the 2015 I-75/I-71  Ohio Crop Tour, we thought it may be interesting to take a look at how we fared with our crop estimates on the 2014 I-75/I-71 Ohio Crop Tour. Here is a look at how our late summer estimates compared to the realities in the fields last fall. On the Tour held Aug. 13 and 14 in 2014, two teams crisscrossed the state hitting 42 of Ohio’s top corn and soybean counties doing corn yield checks and soybean crop assessments. The tour offered a huge amount of variability with corn everywhere from mid-pollination to late dent. A corn field and a soybean field were sampled in each county.

After last fall’s harvest, we followed up on four stops from the 2014 Tour to see how the fields actually performed. Here are the results.

I-75 leg

The corn yield estimate in Hancock County was 215 bushels. After the yield check on Aug.… Continue reading
